This little country town is on the slopes of Maui's Haleakala mountain. Makawao Town has a cowboy, or "PANIOLO" flavor, being the hub of a local farming and ranching community . There are numerous restaurants and eateries, including Komoda Store and Bakery, Makawao Steak House, and Polli's Mexican Restaurant. Old stores have been turned into cute boutiques that sell gifts and clothing among other things. Art galleries abound with many original and creative art works on display. Makawao also has a post office, gas stations, a library, and Rodeo Grounds which are the site of the annual 4th of July Rodeo. It's a busy little town with a lot going on all year round. Stop in and do some shopping, have a meal, take a scenic drive up to Olinda or Kula.
Makawao has a thriving art scene which is not surprising, given the natural beauty of the surroundings. The Hui Noeau Art Center is located on the outskirts of Makawao on Baldwin Ave. and they offer classes and training in many of the fine arts.
Once you've been to Makawao you just might want to own a piece of the rock!
